Behavior Therapies
● Classical Conditioning of Aversion
○ Goal is NOT to get rid of conditioned responses
○ Goal IS to acquire a conditioned response
● Operant Conditioning Techniques - Change undesirable behavior by changing patterns
of reinforcement
○ Increase reinforcement after desired (alternative) behavior
○ Decrease reinforcement of undesired behavior
○ Examples:
■ Reducing childhood obesity
■ Reducing noncompliant behavior in children
○ Contingency Management
■ i.e. Time Out
○ Token Economies
■ Idea of reinforcing particular behaviors with something that can be
exchanged with something rewarding, a token (stickers, etc)
○ Stimulus Satiation
■ Give someone too much of something so they don’t like them
Cognitive Therapies
● Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) - Albert Ellis
○ Attempts to modify the irrational beliefs that cause distress
○ Confrontational and Directive (Ellis’s Model of Maladaptive Behavior)
■ Activating Event ——> Belief about event ——> Consequence
○ Common Irrational Beliefs
■ “I must be perfect”, “I have no control over my happiness"
■ “Everyone must love me”
■ “It is catastrophic when things don’t go as planned"
● Beck’s Cognitive (Behavioral) Therapy (CBT)
○ Automatic Thoughts - thoughts people have about life and the self that may be
unreasonable but are accepted as accurate
■ Automatic thoughts create depression and anxiety
■ Goal: teach clients to control their thoughts
Group Therapies
● Features of Group Therapy
○ Therapist can see clients interacting
○ Client realizes others have the same difficulties
○ Group members can boost each others’ self-confidence and self-acceptance
○ Clients learn from one another
○ Clients more willing to share feelings and are more sensitive to others
○ Clients can test new skills in a supportive environment
