PSY 348 Lecture 6: Week 6 Notes
Document Summary
Hobbes: before society was developed, there was no such thing as justice or injustice. Famously, hobbes says that before society, when people lived in a state of nature , life was solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short one lived in constant fear of being killed by others. It was a war of all against all. Justice is adhering to the agreements that are made to enable the existence and continuance of society. Of course we should behave justly because it would be irrational not to. I was in pain to consider the miserable condition of the old man; and now my aims, giving him some relief, doth also ease me . On hobbes" view, we only help others in pain because we are feeling the pain too. We want to get rid of our own pain, that"s why we help the other person. We only care to relieve their pain because we want to relieve our own.
