PSY 352 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Psy, Attention Span
Document Summary
Meal level stability: maintaining consistent level of trait. Rank order stability: maintaining individual position within group (ex: you"re probably taller than you were in 5th grade, but there"s a good chance the tallest people now were the tallest people then) Maintaining rank order but changing manifestation of trait (ex: aggressive toddlers vs. aggressive adults) Collect data over long period of time, follow same participants. Disadvantages: people die/difficult to maintain generations of researchers. Collect data at one time, comparing people of different ages. Disadvantages: different people in different groups (probably grew up very differently) Temperament: genetically-based behavioral tendencies seen in young children. 6 components of temperament (1) fearful distress (2) irritable distress (3) attention span. 9/14/16 (4) activity level (5) positive affect (6) soothability. Goodness of fit: how well temperament fits with environment. Ex: difficult babies + supportive parents = better adjustment.
