Religion comes from the latin word religare . Re - again ligare - to bond/tie. Religion has some kind of time back. Why is there always something always there: thats what our experience is like. Are we just projecting our own ideas onto religion. Materialist - only the material world is real, religion is just some kind of fantasy. Carol marks - false comfort, believe in god and be rewarded in heaven. Functionalist - assuming that material world is the only thing, religion is productive doing something positive in human culture this is why its been around for so many years. Emile durklen - religion functions to hold societies together. a religion is a uni ed practice which unite to a moral community of a church. Summed up: religion brings people together around items and ideas that set apart religion functions to bring these groups into communities.
