The Second Great Awakening !
-America went under a wave of religious revivals known as the Second Great Awakening !
-The largest outpouring of religious sentiment since the American Revolution !
-Percentage of church membership was not that great after the Revolution !
-Separation of church and state was liberated completely !
-Second great awakening replaces the old puritan religion of new England and its view on sin !
-The new religion stressed that by taking personal responsibility and doing hard work anyone
could achieve salvation !
-With that positive message, the Methodist and Baptist churches went through growth
periods !
-Thousands of people showed up for emotional revival meetings, where communities would
join together to repent their sins !
-Was an emotional heartfelt religion !
-Burned District by holding so many hellļ¬re sermons !
The Womenā€™s Movement and Abolitionism !
- Women were not allowed in the main convention and have a voice, they would have to sit
behind a curtain !
-They just had to sit up there and listen to it which really made them angry !
-Women said this was wrong and they have to not only ļ¬ght against slavery with our fellow
abolitionists but they have to ļ¬ght against women enslavement !
-Have the rise of womenā€™s rights movement !
-They rewrite the Declaration of Independence saying that all men and women are created
equally ā€” not just men!
-They begin to call for the right to vote, increased property rights for women, increased
employment opportunities for women!
-They move into issues!
ā€¢They look into male drunkenness !
ā€¢They look at the amount of money that goes into the saloons!
ā€¢See this as a moral issue and economic injustice !
ā€¢ā€œGet men out of the saloons and youā€™ll have more money for the familyā€!
-Some will move into the urban reform !
ā€¢Take on the issues of children !
ā€¢Take on the issues of motherā€™s health !
ā€¢Make cities places where people can eat wholesome food, and can be safe in their jobs !
-Social ambition that goes together with their ambition for the suļ¬€rage that deļ¬nes the
womenā€™s movement !
The Lowell Girls !
-1800ā€™s America was moving quickly away from their agricultural country into an industrialized
nation !
-With the transformation came the creation of a new workforce, for a new kind of factory !
-Sons would move west with mothers, but what to do with daughters?!
ā€¢They moved into the new textile industries !
-One of them opened by Francis Cabot Lowell made the process of turning cotton into cloth !
-After Lowell died, his friends built a city around his factory and named it after him !
-The factories drew women from all over New England ā€” some as young as 16 !
-They came to help with the families income and more importantly they came to discover a
new life, one of opportunity and independence !
-Lowell, Massachusetts was the ļ¬rst real factory town !
ā€¢Had boarding houses and churches !
ā€¢Had places where the girls could attend lectures and concerts !
