Document Summary

Hort 3503 sustainable and organic horticulture (please excuse typos, i type quickly and without 4 keys and i do forget to edit!) Soil is the center or foundation of sustainable and organic production systems. Soil is related to: plant health, crop quality and yield, water quality, air quality, soil biodiversity and farm biodiversity. Soils are not a sterile medium and you cannot correct a bad location with bad soil. By preventing erosion, building soil structure and nutrition, minimize tillage and use cover cropping. Reduce use of soluble synthetic fert and increase use of organic nutrient sources from on the farm, such as manures and composts. Composition, texture, structure and aggregation, water infiltration, percolation, holding capacity, bulk. Based on inorganic portions of the relative proportion of sand, silt and clay. Soil texture depends what crop can be grown: potatoes best in sandy soil and rice in clay. Soil texture affects drainage, aeration, water holding, cultivation, nutrient content and retention.
