Document Summary

Sociologist: a person who intensively, endlessly, shamelessly interested in what people are doing: take surveys and opinions. Humans are wired to be social: which is why we unwind by going out with friends and family even after grueling events in our lives (deadlines, marathons, exams) We live with social patterns that we take for granted as routine, ordinary, and expected (social structure: example: checking your phone as soon as you wake up. We use them as alarm clocks, we check the weather, social media, and the news. Behaviors are not unique usually, there are patterns and sociologists are interested in these patterns and how they change over time. Sociology: the study of social life, social change, social causes, and consequences of human behavior (group patterns) Why do we need sociology: it helps explain how our society works, helps us look beyond personal experiences and gain insight into larger world order, focuses on structural forces.
