BIOL 1081 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Energy, Eukaryote, Homeostasis
TUESDAY 8/22
• Defining Characteristics of Life- cell organization, metabolism, growth, development,
production, complexity, organization, respond to stimuli, energy utilization,
homeostasis, evolutionary adaptation
• Are viruses alive? –No because they lack cells (acellular)
o Can only reproduce inside a host cell
• What is science?
o Seeks to explain the natural world
o Assumes we can trust our senses
o Explanations are tested using evidence from the natural world
o Based on testing explanations against observations of the natural world and
rejecting the ones that fail the test
• What’s out there? How does it work? How did it come to be this way or interact with its
natural world?
• 7 Unifying Themes of Biology
o Cells as the basic unit of life
o Energy transfer and transformation
o Feedback and regulation
o DNA as common genetic material
o Common evolutionary history explains both similarities and diversity
o Structure and function relationships
o Emergent properties
• Mechanistic View- biological systems obey the laws of chemistry and physics
• Which taxonomic domain includes multicellular photosynthetic organisms? - Eukarya
