Introduction & Learning Biology
1. What is the format of this course and the rationale behind it?
This class is formatted in a way where you prepare notes and learning outcomes
outside of class, and come prepared to class ready to integrate that information
into practice. The rationale behind it is that by not taking notes in class and
having prior knowledgeable about the material, class time can be used for
engaging and group work, for better understanding of the material.
2. What do you want or expect from a professor?
I want a professor who is knowledgeable about the content, prepared, and
respectful to students. I want my professor to be willing and accessible to help
me succeed.
3. How are grades determined in this course?
Grades are determined from:
o 5%- in class assignments (lowest 2 dropped)
o 5%- group assignments
o 5%-post class quizzes (averaged, 3 dropped)
o 5%- pre-class quizzes (averaged, 3 dropped)
o 10%- pre-class Connect assignments (5 dropped)
o 70%-exams +final (lowest exam dropped)
4. What questions or concerns do you have about this course?
I wonder how I will do with this type of learning set up. I had a class set up
similarly and did well, but this is different than any other class I have done
before.
5. Give a definition of life, i.e. Describe the defining characteristics of all living organisms.
Life is a set of characteristics that help categorize soethig’s existece.
Characteristics of all living things:
o Cellular organization-consist of one or more cells
o Ordered complexity-complexity
o Sensitivity- response to stimuli
o Growth, development, and reproduction- heredity
o Energy utilization- diet
o Homeostasis- maintenance of internal conditions
o Evolutionary adaptation- adapting to environment
6. Define science, describing how it works, what it is useful for, and how it is different from
other ways of knowing and understanding the world around us.

Document Summary

I want a professor who is knowledgeable about the content, prepared, and respectful to students. I wonder how i will do with this type of learning set up. Biology & evolution: list the three domains into which all living organisms are currently classified. Phenotypic variations exist among individuals and variation is heritable. Those individuals with heritable traits are better suited to the environment will survive: there is variation in trait, differential reproduction, and heredity. It does involve adaption, but not due to a trying or wanting. Genetic variation is due to a random mutation. You either have the genes or you do(cid:374)"t: natural selection gives organisms what they need. It acts on genetic variation in a population. It the genetic variation happens to allow an organism to survive, then it does, and vice versa: natural selection acts for the good of the species.
