CH. 3: LISTENING AND RESPONDING NOTES
What is Listening?
• Hearing- the physiological process that occurs when the brain detects sound
waves
• Listening- the process of receiving, attending to, constructing meaning from,
and responding to spoke or nonverbal messages
Listening Challenges:
Apprehension
• Listening apprehensions- anxiety we feel about listening
Style
• Listening Style- favored and usually unconscious approach to listening
• Content oriented listeners- listeners who focus on and evaluate the facts and
evidence
• People oriented listeners- listeners who focus on the feelings their
conversational partners may have about what they are saying
• Action oriented Listeners- listeners who focus on the ultimate point the
speaker is trying to make
• Time oriented Listeners- listeners who prefer brief and hurried
conversations and often use nonverbal and verbal cues to signal that their
partner needs to be more concise
Processing Approach
• Passive listening- habitual and unconscious process of receiving messages
• Active listening- deliberate and unconscious process of attending to,
understanding, remembering, evaluating, and responding to messages
Active Listening Improvement Strategies:
Attending
• Attending- the process of intentionally perceiving and focusing on a message
• 1. Get physically ready to listen
• 2. Resist mental distractions
• 3. Hear the speaker out
• 4. Find personal relevance
Understanding
• Understanding- accurately interpreting a message
• 1. Identify the goal and main points
• 2. Ask questions
o questions- a statement designed to clarify information or get
additional details
• 3. Paraphrase silently
