Characteristics of Effective Informative Speaking
Informative Speaking- a speech whose goal is to explain or describe facts,
truth, and principles in a way that stimulates interest, facilitates
understanding, and increases the likelihood or remembering
Intellectually stimulating- info that is new to audience members and is
explained in a way that piques their curiosity
Relevant
Creative-info that produces original, innovative ideas
o Productive thinking- to contemplate something from a variety of
perspectives
o 1. Rethink a topic, issue, or problem from any perspectives
o 2. Make your thoughts visibly by sketching drawings, diagrams and
graphs
o 3. Set regular goals to actually produce something
o 4. Combine and recombine ideas, images, and thoughts in different
ways

Methods of Informing
Description- MOI used to create an accurate, vivid, verbal picture of an object
geographic feature, setting, or image
Definition- MOI that explains something by identifying its meaning
o Synonym- word that has a same or a similar meaning
o Antonym- word that is directly opposite in meaning
Comparison and Contrast- MOI that focuses on how something is similar to
and different from other things
Narration- MOI that explains something by recounting events,
autobiographical event, myth, story, or another account, autobiographical
Demonstration- MOI that shows how something is done, displays the stages
of a process or depicts how something works
Informative Process Speeches
Process speech- a speech that explains and shows how something is done, is
made, or works (demonstration)
Informative Expository Speeches
Expository speech- an informative presentation that provides carefully
researched in depth knowledge abut a complex topic
Exposition of political, economic, social, religious, or ethical issues
Exposition of historical events and forces
Exposition of a theory, principle, or law
Exposition of a creative work
