Document Summary

We"re going to begin this class with some basics so that i can be sure that everyone is one the same page. For those of you who have had anthropology or archaeology classes, this should be a good review for you. Anthropology = anthro (human) + ology (study of) Therefore, it"s the study of humankind, extant and extinct, from holistic, or all-encompassing approach. Because anthropology is interested in everything about humans, it is a very broad field and as a result, anthropologists specialize. The most basic division within anthropology is related to the very nature of human existence: physical anthropology deals with humans primarily as biological organisms, cultural anthropology views humans as the animals with culture. Even these two realms are not wholly independent, but they do serve to bisect the range of humanity into manageable domains of study. Within both physical and cultural anthropology, there are a variety of subfields.
