Legal issues in corrections: types of lawsuits inmates file. When an inmate feels their rights have been violated, action is taken to the court system. Bill of rights and the 14th amendment are the most commonly used as support. Before going to court, inmates are required to go through a lengthy grievance process in attempts to fix the problem domestically, rather than bothering the courts, and preventing judicial backup. This reduces the amount of frequent filers from backing up the courts: the only exception would be if the inmate alleges he/she is under. Imminent danger or serious physical harm. : lastly the inmate must exhaust all administrative remedies, grievances, oh: small papers among prison walls, kites , are available for inmates to fill out and for the warden to read. If the warden is able to fix the problem reasonably, this prevents a lawsuit, while the inmate is satisfied: internal appeals.
