The Role of Motivation
• Crucial to achieving a goal
• Pre-contemplator- chance are you will not change
• Choose behavior you desire to change
What Makes A Goal Go From Good to Great?
• Smart
o Setting smart goals
o When you set a smart goal, you should be able to quickly look at it and
know if its SMART or not
o Does not have to be a difficult process
o If its not meeting the SMART seal of approval, break it down into
something smaller and more achievable
SMART
• Specific
o Specific goal has must greater chance of being accomplished than a
general goal
▪ Ex: Read 4 pages of text an hour
• Measurable
o Establish concentrate criteria for tracking progress toward its
attainment
o Measuring progress helps you stay on track
▪ Ex: Study 1 hour a day for 8 days
• Action Oriented/ Attainable
o What actions will you take to attain your goals
▪ Ex: Study 20 hours every week outside of class and save my
extra energy for final’s week
• Realistic
o Goal is not realistic, you will not accomplish it
o Represent an objective toward which you are both willing and able to
work
o Consider work load, etc.
▪ Ex: Go to all classes and try to maintain 3.0 GPA
• Time Oriented
o With no time frame tied to your goal, you are less likely to succeed or
even try to accomplish it
o Someday wont work
▪ Ex: I’ll start my paper at 5pm and work for it 2 hours a day
• Examples of SMART Goals
o Ex: Good Goal- to get better grades---- SMART Goal: I will read
assigned material before class, and will visit a tutor one day per week
