PHYS 1051 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Victoria And Albert Museum
Ch. 2 Kinematics
General Notes
• Kinematics- the study of motion without regard for its cause
• All motion is relative
• Motion- a change of position relative to a point considered to be stationary
o Establish a frame of reference
• Displacement- change of position in a particular direction
o Units of length= m, km
o A vector quantity
o x= xF- xI
• Acceleration- change in velocity
2 Types of Quantity
• Vector Quantity- physical quantity that has both direction and magnitude
o Displacement
o Velocity, acceleration, force
o Ex: 10 steps west (magnitude and direction)
• Scalar Quantity- physical quantity that is described by magnitude alone
o Distance-path length
o Speed, temperature, mass
o Ex: 20 steps
Average Speed
• S(avg)= total distance/ time = d/t
• Units of L/T (cm/s, m/s)
• Formula: S(avg)= d/t
• Quantity
• Ex: S(avg)= 2.0x10^1/13.385
o S(avg)= 1.5 m/s
Average Velocity
• V(avg)=displacement/time
• Quantity
• Displacement= x= XF-XI
o Difference
o Change in position
• Formula: V(avg)=x/ T
• Units of length and time= m/s, km/hr
