Intrinsic motivation: act itself is motivating or internally rewarding. Extrinsic motivation: outcome is separate from person (went over all of this last class as well) Instinct approaches: proposed that some human actions may be motivated by instincts. Instincts: innate patterns of behavior found in both people and animals: example, we know a person is hungry because they are eating, they are eating because they are hungry. Primary drives: involve needs of the body such as hunger, sex and thirst. Acquired (secondary) drives: learned through experience or conditioning, such as the need for money of social approval. Homeostasis: the tendency of the body to maintain a steady state. Need for achievements (nach): desire to attain realistic and challenging goals. Need for af liation (naff): need for social interaction.
