PSY 223 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: 1Worldspace, Object Permanence, Habituation
Document Summary
Approaches to learn about infant perception and cognition: they are shown. Baby has developed some sort of mental representation of the picture. Habituation: process by which a baby compares each new stimulus with a developing memory of the stimulus based on previous exposures, thus learning about the stimulus. Novelty responsiveness: following habituation, process in which a baby looks more at a new stimulus than at a familiar one. Learning: putting a baby in a crib with a mobile; after baseline of how often the baby kicks, conditions are changed, responses noted and that baby is retested telling us about infant learning and memory. Recognizes difference between old picture ad new picture. Infant who previously learned the association between kicking and mobile-moving relearns that association more rapidly than they did the first time (remembering) Observation: babies shown a sequence of events an observed to see if they imitate the sequence.
