The abuse of illegal drugs, alcohol, and tobacco is the cause of more deaths, illnesses and disabilities than any other preventable health condition. Maladaptive pattern of use in which it interferes with role obligations. A state in which the use of substance is required for a person to function normally. Once diagnosed with dependence, can"t go back to abuse diagnosis. Dsm-5 no longer differentiates between abuse and dependence - substance use disorder. Want to be able to get help sooner rather than later. If umbrella term - may be able to provide services, but are some people slipping through that need more intensive treatment.
