Document Summary

Initial phase of classical conditioning: extinction. In classical conditioning, when a ucs does not follow a cs: generalization. Tendency for stimuli similar to cs to elicit similar responses: spontaneous recovery. Reappearance, after a rest period, of an extinguished cr. Ex: the dog would salivate when we rang the bell, we took that away, brought it back and the dog salivated again: discrimination. Ability to distinguish between a cs and other stimuli that do not signal a ucs. Updating pavlov"s work: adding cognitive component, biological predispositions-ex: really liked a food, but got sick after eating it once, so you don"t eat it anymore, learned food aversion. Occurs as an automatic response to stimulus: b. f. skinner (1904-1990) Chamber with a bar or key that an animal manipulates to obtain a food or water reinforcer. Any event that strengthens the behavior it follows: shaping. Reinforcers guide behavior toward closer approximations of a desired goal: primary reinforcer.
