Functional impairment and factitious disorder: tend to have many hospitalizations, may actually develop real medical illnesses due to self-administered injuries, numerous surgical operations, or self-injections, 6-22% of children die from medical illnesses inflicted on them. Prevalence of somatic symptom disorder: 0. 2-2% of women, less than 0. 2% of men, 20% of female relatives also develop somatic symptoms, suggesting hereditability, begins in adolescence or young adulthood. Illness preoccupation present for at least 6 months: can begin at any age, typically starts in early adulthood, 1-5% prevalence, equal prevalence among men and women, 7% of pcp patients have the disorder. Etiology of somatic symptom disorders: biological, brain malfunction versus structural abnormalities, psychodynamic, defense mechanisms, intrapsychic conflict, and personality, primary and secondary gain, behavioral, modeling and reinforcement, cognitive, communication, distorted cognitions, somatic amplification. Inaccurate beliefs: prevalence of illness, symptoms, and treatment, environment, stress, sexual abuse, family violence or conflict, family separation or loss, unsupportive parental relationships, and sexual assault.
