The victim"s role in the dark figure of crime. Two-party system, no place for the victim. Victim s role seen throughout the entire process from police to parole. Victim plays role throughout the entire cj process: Separation in the courtroom kept separate from offender so they don"t have to be with them. 49 states have come up with own legislation for victims rights. Want to know, but not be active participants. They want to be heard in every stage. No longer public matter (state vs. offender) Don"t know everything about the cjs or criteria for eg. bail. Victim"s rights more important?--> suffer (defend, commit crime) Victim not on trial victim might lie, not always nice (may have ulterior motives) Ready by or on behalf of the crime victim. Often during sentencing phase after defendant found guilty. Describe impact of crime in own words. Vic"s give them right to be heard. Should be allowed to make a statement.
