Too much land turned to cash crops. Learned how to take seeds from trees to grow more. Complaints were symptoms - needed to find causes of these symptoms. When elders died, the culture dies with them. All people have culture, but when you remove that culture from them, you kill them. Killed many kenyans, very few europeans were killed. Happened with firt president, and continued with second. Regime made it seem like kenya was the way it was and couldn"t be changed. No one bothered them because no one pays attention to women or took them seriously. When the movement grew, the government intervened. Maathai said to respond to conflict with peaceful communication. Wanted to take park and make skyscraper and statue of visitor. Only place no one will ask you what you are doing or ask for money. Related their park to one in london, central park. Wrote them a letter asking for help.
