MUSC 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Roman Numerals, Music Theory, Major Scale
Document Summary
Every scale degree can become a root of a triad within the designated key. These are built by adding thirds to each scale degree, using the scale degree as a root. Diatonic- uses the notes of a scale, and only those notes. The diatonic chord pattern is the same for different keys. Chords and harmonies use roman numerals instead of standard numerals. The chords for c major would be c major, d minor, e minor, f major, g major, a minor, and b diminished. These triads are naturally occurring in major keys. Tonal music is built around the tonic; music usually starts and ends with the tonic. The v chord has the (cid:373)ost (cid:862)pull(cid:863) towards the to(cid:374)ic, or te(cid:374)sio(cid:374) The vii shares two notes with the tonic (the 7th and 2nd scale degrees) and so also has pull or tension toward the tonic. The subdominant, or iv chord, will usually pull towards the v chord.
