CFT 412 Lecture 1: Class 1: April 2
Document Summary
Begin with intimacy (friendship) and grow into love. Begin with primarily passion and later develop decision/commitment and intimacy. Begin as a cognitive commitment decision (such as arranged marriage) and develop intimacy, passion and love. Develops over time, begins slowly and increases if relationship is positive. If relationship dissolves then commitment is no longer present. Usually commitment is expressed as people move into advanced stages of relationship (moving in together, engagement) or when they stay in relationship during difficult tie. Involves sharing feelings and providing emotional support. Usually entails high levels of self- disclosure. Gradually increases as closeness grows between people. Usually expressed by touching, kissing, being affectionate and sexual interactions. Can be intense and can develop quickly, which means it can also fade quickly. Sometimes when passion ends a person can experience withdrawal symptoms such as irritability and depression. Committed on basis of passion but has not had the time to develop true intimacy.
