● Cognitive attachment to another person
● Develops over time, begins slowly and increases if relationship is
positive
● If relationship dissolves then commitment is no longer present
● Usually commitment is expressed as people move into advanced
stages of relationship (moving in together, engagement) or when
they stay in relationship during difficult tie

● Usually entails high levels of self- disclosure
● Gradually increases as closeness grows between people
● Involves building trust and becoming vulnerable
