The storm surge was amplified by years of oil and natural gas companies degrading wetlands with pipelines causing the land to sink. The mississippi river levee system compounds that problem by preventing much of the river"s silt from being deposited in the ocean where it would create natural buffers. The mrgo canal, built though the 9th ward, decimated bayous. The levee system originally intended to protect the city was poorly designed and in disrepair due to political bickering, the gw bush administration had approved an 80% cut to levee repair funds. An open door to the admin at the time govt at the federal and local level failed to repair the levees, and failed to protect the regions.
