Document Summary

Cover the major evolutionary events of the paleozoic. Put what we know about the carbon cycle into context. 1st time period: cambrian period (541-485 ma) Animals have ability to dig into sediment. Ocean floor is being mixed at a faster rate. Glaciation as all the continents move to bottom of the earth. Base of ocean, giant sea scorpions, ocean life becomes more complex, crinoids, complex top predators. Need water to reproduce, not a lot of structure, don"t get very large. Ja(cid:449) eat (cid:271)igger, tougher/hard parts, (cid:373)ore di(cid:448)erse diet (cid:894)(cid:271)ig evolutionary step) Still some jawless, boney plates and hard parts (teeth) for defense. To be on land and be bigger, had to develop a way to transport water around plant body (against gravity) and keep self upright/supported with structure. Very small pants and now (fossils found of ) 8ft tall fungus (not trees!) Orga(cid:374)i(cid:272) (cid:373)atter o(cid:374) la(cid:374)d di(cid:448)ersifi(cid:272)atio(cid:374), larger orga(cid:374)is(cid:373)s. Eyelids, getting water to body, swim bladders, lungs.
