GEOL 305 Lecture 10: Intro to Saurischian Prosauropoda (Day 10)
Document Summary
Includes smallest & largest of dinosaurs, & all of meat-eating dinosaurs. Many meat-eaters have fossil evidence for feathers. Even though there is great variety & diversity in this group, it is considered monophyletic. Over 12: dorsal (cid:448)erte(cid:271)rae has e(cid:454)tra (cid:862)(cid:449)i(cid:374)g(cid:863) o(cid:374) side, thumb (digit #1 of hand) twists outwards. Include herrerasauridae, & forms such as eoraptor & eodromaeus. Considerably larger @ 10 20 ft in length. Somewhat older than eodromaeus, but still within late triassic. From same age & region of argentina as eodromaeus, (although considered to be herbivorous) Has features similar to those found in prosauropoda. From early late jurassic of s brazil. Also from late triassic of barzil, shown feeding on an herbivorous, nondinosaurian, archosaur. Wide variety of bipedal & quadrupedal dinosaurs over subsequent 160 million years of dinosaur presence on earth. Saurischians more advanced than these basal forms are divided between 2 major groups, mostly carnivorous theropoda, & mostly herbivorous sauropodamorpha.
