The gold rush made the west modern by bringing immigrants and a source of money. Railroads connected the west to naional and internaional markets and connected western farms and forests to urban centers. The railroads brought capitalism by connecing to factories and ciies: merchants and bankers were the ones who really made money out of the gold rush, wells fargo bank got started during the gold rush. Wasted economic opportuniies: natural wealth: amazing water with cod isheries and salmon isheries. There was just no way to sell it. Timber, ore, agriculture commodiies: there was no transportaion infrastructure. The goal of the men building the railroads was not to help the west meet. East, but just to become very very wealthy. The credit mobilier scandal: in 1864, thomas durant and george francis train established the credit mobilier construcion company, though they kept their names of the aricle of incorporaion.
