Pathology
● pathologist: diagnose things, looking under microscope to render diagnosis
● path: medical school, residency (surgical pathology and clinical pathology), +/- fellowships
(develop sub specialization)
● she diagnoses blood disorders, often leukemia and lymphoma (hematopathology=her
specialization)
● encompasses a lot of time at the microscope studying biopsies, blood slides, etc
● pathology practice often is ruling in or ruling out cancer (main q docs often want them to
answer)
Rwanda and Partners in Health
● tiny country in middle of Africa
● most densely populated country in all of Africa
● in reality it is very rural, most people live outside of urban areas
● towns are small and spread apart
● she was in the north in Butaro
○ one in 3 district hospitals in Rwanda run by Partners in Health
○ Rwanda is broken up into provinces then districts
○ PIH vision: want to show preferential care to the poor… mainly to the rural poor
■ this is how they decided where to place the hospitals
● Butter District Hospital opened in 2011
○ Butaro Cancer Center of Excellence opened in 2012
■ PIH vision: Quality cancer care in a rural setting (something that is not
usually done)
■ was not designed to handle entire cancer needs of the whole country
■ want to decentralize cancer care from Butaro into other parts of the country
● Goals: expand cancer care to other provinces
○ limit disruption in referral patterns
● Land of thousand hills=area around Butaro, which is most mountainous
● not a lot of private car ownership, people usually out walking and kids love to play in the
roads
○ generally dirt roads not paved
○ makes drive harder and longer
● Small town of Ruzumo is 1 miles from hospital
● obesity rate is low, everyone is walking
