Document Summary

Unit 1 notes gen chem 1315: unit 1. 1 matter, transformation. Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. Mass-quantitative measure of amount of matter in an object, independent of gravity. Weight-measure of the force of gravitational attraction between a significantly large body and an object = mass x acceleration due to gravity. Element: composed of one type of atom (which are all the same) Compound: 2+ atoms that are bonded ie. water. Atoms are submicroscopic particle that are building blocks of matter. Molecule: a chemical combination of 2+ atoms. Homogenous mixture: same composition throughout ie. air, tea, coffee. Heterogeneous mixture: composition varies from one region to another ie. oil, vinegar, mustard, wet sand etc. Law of conservation of mass: total mass of substance present after chem reaction = total mass of substance before reaction. Law of constant composition: elemental composition of pure compound is constant.
