Fictive kin: a family is a social group of two or more persons characterized by ongoing interdependence with long-term commitments that stem from blood, law or affection. Underlying approach to much family communication research. What does dialectic mean: two things are interdependent but they seem to negate one another. Three primary dialectics: autonomy/connection, privacy/openness, novelty/predictability.
