PSY 1113 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Spinal Cord, Myelin, Central Nervous System
Document Summary
Afferent nerves sensory nerves: carry messages to the brain and spinal cord. Efferent nerves(motor nerves): carry messages from spinal cord to the brain. Neutral networks: networks of nerve cells that integrate sensory and motor nerves. Connects the brain and spinal cord to the rest of our body. Sympathetic (arousal, getting you ready for fight or flight) Parasympathetic( calming, bring you back after adrenaline) Nerve cells that process information and allow communication throughout the body. Job is to get information from the neurons near them. Myelin - insulates axon to protect it, to help transition go smoothly if/when this deteriorates the information will not process and then signals will not transmit. Babies have this issue because myalinazation will develop when they are about two years old. Message coming in dendrites, going down the axon moving to the next terminal button/anxon in line. Resting potential: neuron is negatively charged at rest but it has potential for action.
