BCS 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Microelectrode, Receptive Field, Edge Detection

24 views3 pages

Document Summary

Our prior observations influence our current expectations. We update our priors when we get new information (posterior observations) These help us choose between various hypotheses. Light enters the eye, passes through the arteries, veins, & sensory neurons, and then finally reacts with our photoreceptors. Cones less sensitive overall, but sensitive to color. Retinal rods & cones are connected by bipolar cells / interneurons to the retinal ganglion cells. On bipolar cells fire if the rods / cones they are connected to fire. Off bipolar cells fire when the rods / cones do not fire, and are silent when the rods / cones. Due to the arrangement of bipolar cells and retinal ganglia in the retina, this leads to edge detection. First to describe the receptive fields of ganglion cells. (receptive field how much of the visual field does a certain cell see ) Tiny micro-electrodes, applied directly to the retina. Show stimulus to the cat, record cell firing.
