BCS 185 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Confirmation Bias, Motivated Reasoning, Attachment In Adults
Document Summary
Relationship processes: info processing: thoughts, beliefs, perceptions about our partner, how it"s all organized hierarchically organized. Can use structure to interpret behaviors of partner. When we describe others, we use mid-level labels. Can link specific observations to higher-order labels certain labels can start to deteriorate. Might be more relevant to discuss perceptions of partner v. how they actually are. Murray, holmes, & griffin: rate self, get rated by partner, rate ideal partner. With enhancement bias, people tended to rate partners closer to their ideal" partner justifying why you"re with partner. Follow-up: husband"s perception of wife is much higher than both friend"s and wife"s perception of wife evidence of enhancement bias: mostly found in good relationships. Macdonald & ross: we tend to be more optimistic of our own relationships than others are about them: accuracy. Gagne & lydon: may be more important to have accurate understanding about relationships strengths & weaknesses. Important to have accuracy at beginning of relationship.
