CHM 137 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Sodium Chloride, Acetic Acid, Toothpick
Document Summary
Experiment 1 pre lab--- the alkaline earths and the halogens. There are 3 parts to this experiment: by mixing each of the 4 solutions containing alkaline earth cations (ba2+, Ca2+, mg2+, or sr2+) with each of the other 4 solutions containing divalent. 2-, co3 2-, c2o4 2-, or cro4 2- ), solubility properties of various anions (so4 ionic compounds containing alkaline earth metal cations can be observed. Set up---get reagents, get the transparency and paper sheet, get lab equipments (9 or more small test tubes, test tube rack, and stoppers for test tubes, bowl of ice, toothpick) (10min) Relative solubilities of alkaline earths/ relative oxidizing powers of halogens lab (35min) Combine notes and correlate reactivity with the periodic table (20min) Identify elements in an unknown alkaline earth halide lab(20min) Relative size of particles in the precipitate. Beware of the tip of the dropper touching the reagent drop already on the film--- possible contamination.
