Limited value of observation and rating methods. Not really : needs are often latent. Might need affiliation, but an observer might not be able to see it: different behavior can serve the same need. Going to the library might not be for achievement, but for socializing with those at the library. Picture and story: thematic aperception test. Henry murray and christina morgan (harvard) made this test. Murray and morgan got together (affair), until morgan died in a pool. Asked people to write a story for a picture. Then the people analyzed the story to find traits and needs. Identify with the main character, and then project their needs and motives on the character.
