Lecture 19: Tobacco Use
-tobacco industry spends about 9 billion dollars on advertising each year
-the industry targets adolescents and teenagers
-the tobacco industry wants to create lifelong smokers and wants people to become addicted,
because that’s how they make money
-tobacco is the most avoidable cause of death and disability in our society
-for each cigarette you smoke, you lose 5-7 minutes of your life
-smoking harms nearly every organ in the body
-inhalation is the most effective delivery pathway for nicotine
-there is NO risk-free level of tobacco exposure! Exposure at any level is harmful!!!!
-cats are more at risk from secondhand smoke than dogs, because they lick their fur, and their fur
has nicotine in it too, from the air. It can also cause cancer in dogs.
-third-hand smoke is contamination left behind in a room, vehicle, clothing, hair, and skin after
second-hand smoke is no longer visible. This can last for weeks, months, and maybe even years.
There is no known effective method to get rid of third hand smoke.
-smokeless tobacco (chewing tobacco, vape) is NOT safe!
-adolescents who use smokeless tobacco are more likely to become cigarette smokers
-chewing tobacco is actually more addictive than cigarettes because it contains higher levels of
nicotine
-hookah is not safe either
-e-cigarettes aren’t safe: they have nicotine, flavorings, and other components which are inhaled
as vapor….NOT just water vapor!!!!!
-the evidence does not show that using e-cigarettes is an effective way to quit smoking real
cigarettes
-what methods work to get people to stop smoking?
