Humans have superior intellect, cognitive abilities, abilities to formulate plans to satisfy desires, intense emotional (complex feelings & complex emotional expression) Some emotions are universal & some are culture specific. Some are intense while others are mild; some pleasant while others are unpleasant; some motivate to take action where others do not. Internal physiological arousal- changes body @ physiological level. Emotions involved expressive behavior in face & body. Cognitive appraisal - try to make sense of emotional experience we have but how we make sense. Common sense view of emotions- emotional experience precedes behavioral expression (i. e. feel happy then smile) James- emotional experience follows behavioral expression (feel happy because we smile) Lange- @ same time came up with theory. Bodily sensations alone are not enough to produce emotions. Emotions are experienced instantly before body has had time to react. Physiological changes that occur are too general to distinguish one emotion from another (i. e. fear, anger & love)
