PSY 181 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Unconditional Positive Regard, Introjection
Document Summary
It is a structure within the body that is different from the organism itself (it is a differentiated portion of the phenomenal field). The gradient of autonomy (you have immediate person control over parts of the self) Not every part of the organism is part of the self. Some psychic material that"s only partially internalized is interjectedthis material is enacted but not self-endorsed, so it"s not part of the self. Love is basic (humans have a propensity to love and be loved by other humans) Need for positive regard: we need this first from our parents and later from significant others. Lack of positive regard is a threat to the self. Distortion: conditional positive regard leads people to distort their feelings in order to maintain the view of themselves as lovable. Introjection: we may introject our caregiver"s values as if they were personally held values in order to maintain the view of ourselves as lovable.
