Document Summary

Person-centered psychotherapy begins with clarification of the client"s phenomenal field. Therapist assumes an actualizing tendency in the client. (assumption that people want to actualize) If we assume that people naturally want to actualize, then their defenses will fall apart naturally under optimal conditions. The therapeutic climate must be absent of threat. Agape (greek word): therapist has to love the client (because they want them to fulfill their potential) Unconditional positive regard (nonjudgmental and non-possessive care); accept all the client"s feelings and experiences; but not acceptance of all behavior (like harming others) Accurate empathy (including skillful listening, not imposing therapist"s own beliefs) Therapist is real and true to themselves as a personmatch between their behavior and their experience. Helps client get clear about their thoughts and feelings. Mirroring: therapist reflects back what they heard. Content mirroring: therapist sticks with content of what client says. Affect mirroring: therapist reflects what client is feeling. Amplifying: taking underlying emotion up a notch.
