Aaron beck argues that cognitive distortions create and maintain depression and other psychological maladies. Underlying cause of psychopathology is maladaptive cognitions and beliefs. Depression + other maladies: people have a negative life experience and then develop faulty cognitions/maladaptive beliefs, which give rise to maladaptive behaviors. Cognitive schema are organized and can be brought to the surface. Therapists can effect lasting behavior changes at the level of cognition. Therapist must make accessible the automatic thoughts that give rise to maladaptive behaviors. Negative self schema: negative views of the self. Negative interpersonal schema: negative views of others. Doesn"t matter how or when you acquired negative schema; it only matters that these negative schema are used in the present. Minimization: patient minimizes successes in order to make themselves seem less. Catastrophizing: makes a catastrophe out of a small issue. Labeling: patient assigns label to themselves and assumes that the label fully successful describes them.
