Dorothea dix documented the horrible conditions that mentally ill people were living in jails, poorhouses, etc. in massachusetts and took her findings to the state legislature to shame them into creating asylums. The first asylums had impressive greek-style architecture, which gave the impression that they were going to be doing good for these patients and perhaps was to distract the public from the mistreatment that was going on inside. Kirkbride plan: template for construction of asylums across the usthese asylums were all similar in their layout. Patients who were more manageable were housed near the center and those who were more unruly were housed in the wings farther from the center office.
