Family, cont"d: physical: infliction/endangerment of physical injury (eg. , punching, kicking, burning) May not always be intentional often, result of attempts to punish child that go overboard: psychological/emotional: speech, actions, interactions that destroy emotional wellbeing, sense of self-worth (eg. , verbal harassment, taunting, teasing) Parents may humiliate child, destroy favorite toys: neglect: failure to provide for child"s basic physical, educational, emotional needs. Physical neglect: abandonment, expulsion from home, neglecting home"s cleanliness. Educational: allowing chronic truancy/failure to enroll child in school. Emotional: inattention to child"s need for affection can overlap with emotional abuse. Spousal abuse may be form of this making child experience conflict. Medical: refusal/delay in seeking medical care for child controversial: sexual: forcing, tricking, coercing sexual behavior between child and older person (eg. , fondling, penetration using sexual/nonsexual objects, pornography) Women tend to be perpetrators more often than men. Tend to be impoverished (stress hypothesis), poorly educated, have little help with kids.
