PSY 267 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, George Orwell
Document Summary
One of the dangers of objectification is that it emphasizes that individuals are both interchangeable and disposable. You can"t dream about being what you can"t see : the lack of powerful women in mainstream media/culture suggests to little girls that being agentic is not something that is important in society. Miss representation: exclusively sexualized and/or objectified. Women have a limited shelf life because youth = beauty. Those beyond 18-40 are not valued as adults/whole people. After 40, women only reappear as grandmothers. Women are seen as objects without rights. Makes it easy to justify violence against them. Correlated to low self-esteem, eating disorders plastic surgery and a sense of value being solely based on appearance: lack of powerful leadership models. Lack of women aspiring to leadership positions. Leads to fewer women in power and thus, society becomes less accepting of powerful women. Linked to the sense of value being solely based on appearance because intellect is not valued enough.
