One of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. Name from greek: gon = semen, rhea = flow. Women are 3 times more likely to become infected on exposure. For those who show symptoms, 2-7 days incubation. Infection of throat, eyes, rectum, urethra, cervix possible. Large amounts of pus in the eye. Can cause sterility, with or without symptoms. Bacteria migrate to joints and cause inflammation. Bacteria invade certain types of epithelium (columnar) Immune cells rush to the site of infection (generates pain) Tissue damage results from local inflammatory response. Gram negative cocci inside white blood cells. Contains species that cause many significant diseases.
