Document Summary

One of a large number of viruses that can cause viral gastroenteritis. Can be caused by a large number of different viruses. Sick individuals shed millions of virions, but only a few virions needed to infect. Infections strike mostly from 4 months to 3 years of age. By age 3, 90% of the population has been infected. Infections in adults are usually mild or entirely without symptoms. Rotavirus uses a triple capsid to survive. 2 day incubation, symptoms last about 1 week. In very young children, dehydration can be life-threatening. Sometimes followed by a short bout of lactose intolerance. Can be diagnosed by antigens in stool (usually not done) Based on a sheep virus related to human rotavirus. Caused a mild infection with no symptoms, granted immunity. Small intestine collapses in on itself, becomes blocked. Condition occurred in 1 in 12,000 children vaccinated. Vaccine pulled off the market by 1999.
