Document Summary

Rough idea: give a theory of right conduct that puts respect for individuals at the heart of the view. Is this person being rational: for kantians, his are important, but they don"t think you can get a theory of right conduct by just appealing to his. His only apply when you have relevant intentions. Consider: if you desire to be nice to friends, and being nice requires that do not kick them, then don"t kick them. Negative claim: never treat someone as a mere means. Positive claim: you must adopt certain ends/intentions/goals about yourself and other people and act in a way to promote them. Means: i use you to as a means to an end when i use you to get something that i want. Mere means: i use you as a mere means when i use you as a means without respecting your autonomy. Hei says to treat humanity as an end in itself.
