Document Summary

Responsible for circulating blood through our body. Space between the visceral pericardium and the parietal pericardium. Inner layer, which covers the valves and is continuous with the endothelium that lines the vessels. Contracts to pump blood out of the heart. Thin walled chambers that empty into the ventricles. Receives blood from the body and supply it to the pulmonary circulation. Low in oxygen and high in carbon dioxide. Brings venous blood from the abdominal and low limb veins. Brings venous blood from venous tributaries of the arms and head. Receives blood from the lungs, carried by the two right and two left pulmonary veins. Blood is rich in oxygen and low in carbon dioxide. Regulate the opening from the atria to the ventricles. Cusps of the av valves are connected to the papillary muscle by string-type fibers called chordae tendineae. When ventricles contract, papillary muscles come closer together and allow the av cusps to close.
