It is often the case with social phenomena that people"s attitudes and behaviors are affected by more than 1 factor. The task that social scientists need to complete is figuring out what such factors are influencing the dependent variable, and how they work together to produce a result. Elaboration: a technique that helps us examine the relationship between two variables (the independent and dependent) while controlling a third variable. Replication: a term used to refer to situations in which a relationship between two variables persists when another (control) variable is held constant.
