ATM S 111 Lecture 7: Oceans- Ocean acidification and Sea level rise

23 views2 pages

Document Summary

Ocean acidification: carbon dioxide can dissolve in water. High co2 in the atmosphere corresponds to more co2 being dissolves. Geoengineering strategies to cool the planet don"t address acidification. Marine organisms make their shells, scales and fins using calcium carbonate. Some types of phytoplankton"s also have extremely tiny shells made of calcium carbonate. Therefore ocean acidification can impair shell formation and this can have a negative effect on the marine ecosystem. Ocean acidification in the nw: puget sound waters are particularly acidic. The reasons are due to carbon emissions and upwelling currents. Also algae bloom caused by fertilizer can cause low oxygen and high. Oyster hatcheries have struggled due to ocean acidification. Sea level rise: sea level is rising around 12 to 22 cm. Sea ice and ice shelves(connected to ice sheets but float on (cid:449)ater) don t (cid:272)ontri(cid:271)ute to sea le(cid:448)el rise. Permafrost and snow cover contribute a really small amount.
